Description of Carbon Steel Nuts and Bolts

Carbon steel nuts and bolts are among the most commonly used fasteners in the construction industry. They offer superior strength-to-weight ratio as well as excellent corrosion resistance – especially when used in environments with saltwater exposure.
Nuts made from carbon steel are available in many different shapes and sizes. Their applications are broad, and range from automotive & aerospace to construction & manufacturing industries.
There are several different grades of carbon steel, and the precise amount of carbon within an alloy can determine its properties. Generally, the higher the amount of carbon, the harder the finished product will be.
A hex nut with opposite slots cut into the top of the nut through the centers of the flats, allowing the insertion of a cotter pin to secure the nut when used with a drilled shank fastener. Also known as a finished pattern slotted nut, these nuts can be used with low or high proof load requirements.
Hex flange nuts are available in low carbon steel and Grade 5 and 8 steel as well as 18.8 stainless steel. They are case-hardened to Rockwell HR15N 78-90 and can span oversized holes.
They are a popular choice for construction, and are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and grades. They are also resistant to corrosion, and can be plated with zinc for a minimal cost. Zinc is the most common coating, but there are several other options to consider. Coatings that offer enhanced corrosion resistance include hot-dipped galvanizing and PTFE or PFA Teflon coatings.
