There are several basic differences between metric and imperial nuts. In addition to their size, they also differ in the thread pitch. For example, M10 means a nut with a diameter of ten millimeters and a thread pitch of 1.5. M20 translates to a nut with a diameter of sixteen millimeters across the flats.
When you are repairing machinery, you need to find the right size and type of nut to complete the job. One of the most common types of metric nuts is the six-sided hex nut. These nuts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including machine screw nuts. These are used in industrial applications and are the most commonly used metric nuts.
Metric nuts are available in hundreds of different sizes and shapes. Typically, they have a hexagonal or square shape, with coarse or fine internal threads. You can order metric nuts according to their size and strength. These nuts are often marked with the strength grade of the bolt that matches the bolt. If you're unsure of the strength grade of a nut, check the manufacturer's manual or check online for the strength rating.
In addition to the strength and size, metric fasteners and nuts are available in five different thread types. These threads have a different pitch than SAE nuts. While SAE bolts and nuts have similar sizes, forcing a metric bolt into an SAE nut can strip one or both threads and compromise the integrity of the connection. It can also lead to leaks and complicate repairs.
